Warm and humid weather conditions persisted on Wednesday (May 20) as the heat index in Port Area, Manila reached 45 degrees Celsius at around 2 p.m., based on the monitoring of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Five other PAGASA monitoring stations also recorded high heat indices between 45 and 50 degrees Celsius on Wednesday afternoon. PAGASA said the highest heat indices registered on Wednesday were in Legazpi City , Sangley Point, Cavite City , Ambulong, Tanauan City , Science City of Muñoz , Port Area in Manila , and Roxas City .

Meanwhile, PAGASA’s Science Garden monitoring station in Quezon City registered a heat index of 43 degrees around 3 p.m. Heat index is the measurement of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. The highest heat index so far this year was recorded in San Jose last April 20 at 58 degrees Celsius. The warm and humid weather across most parts of country can be attributed to the prevailing easterly winds originating from the Pacific.
