The trough of Typhoon Choi-wan will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Visayas and Mindanao, while fair weather is expected in Luzon, PAGASA said.

The trough of Typhoon Choi-wan will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao on Sunday and in the coming days, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration ( PAGASA) said.

Choi-wan Trough Brings Heavy Rains

In its 4 a.m. forecast on Sunday, the state weather bureau said the trough of the typhoon will affect Mindanao, Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, Central Visayas and Southern Leyte. Moderate to at times heavy rains could trigger flash floods or landslides in affected areas, PAGASA warned. Residents were urged to stay alert.

In its 4 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA maintained that the trough is expected to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Mindanao, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, Leyte, and Southern Leyte. PAGASA weather specialist Daniel James E. Villamil earlier said in the agency's 5 p.m. forecast that the trough, or extension, of Typhoon Choi-wan was affecting parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.

We should remain prepared and alert for the threats of flooding and landslides, especially if the rains continue, Villamil said in Filipino. As of 3 p.m., Typhoon Choi-wan was estimated outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility at 2,610 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 175 kph and gusts of up to 215 kph. Earlier, as of 3 a.m., the typhoon was located 2,595 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon.

It had maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 190 kph. It was moving north-northeastward at 15 kph. As of 3 p.m. Saturday, Choi-wan was about 2,580 kilometers east of Northern Luzon, still outside PAR, with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gusts of up to 170 kph, moving northeastward at 20 kph.

Metro Manila Fair Weather Expected

It is far from our country and it will not enter our PAR, Villamil said in Filipino and English. Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms. From Monday to Wednesday, generally fair weather is expected in Metro Manila and most parts of Luzon, including Baguio and Legazpi, although localized thunderstorms may occur in the afternoon and evening.

Parts of the Visayas, including Cebu, Iloilo and Tacloban, may experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms during the same period. On Monday, light to moderate winds and slight to moderate coastal waters are expected, with waves running from 0.6 meters to 1.2 meters. No gale warning was raised over the country's coastal waters, although thunderstorms offshore may cause sudden increases in winds and wave heights.

PAGASA said Luzon and the Visayas will experience light to moderate winds from the northeast to northwest, with coastal waters expected to be slight to moderate and wave heights of 0.6 to 1.2 meters. Mindanao will have light to moderate winds from the west to southwest, with coastal waters also expected to be slight to moderate.

At the PAGASA Science Garden weather station in Diliman, Quezon City, the highest temperature recorded on Sunday reached 33.6 degrees Celsius at 3 p.m., while the lowest temperature was logged at 24.8 degrees Celsius at 5:00 a.m. In Metro Manila, PAGASA recorded a maximum temperature of 31.8 degrees Celsius at 2 p.m. Saturday and a minimum of 24.8 degrees Celsius at 5 a.m. For Manila Bay, the high tide was forecast at 2:24 a.m. at 1.2 meters, while the low tide was expected at 12:35 p.m. at negative 0.08 meter.
