Two weeks ago, at the Pac-12’s preseason media extravaganza in Las Vegas, commissioner George Kliavkoff offered a succinct, confident view of the college sports landscape. “We’ll get our media rights deal done, we’ll announce the deal,” he said. “I think the realignment that’s going on in college athletics will come to an end for this cycle.”After a mass exodus that decimated the 108-year-old conference, the 2023 cycle of realignment appears to be over.
Stanford has the resources to sustain a demotion; Cal does not. Both schools are undoubtedly pursuing membership in the Big Ten at huge discounts … and with faint hopes.The conference thought it would lose San Diego State to the Pac-12. Instead, it kept the Aztecs and could very well add the Pac-12’s remaining quartet.
