ICYMI: The province’s Employment Standards Act only requires employers to provide one paid sick day, and only for workers who have been at the same job for five years.

For workers who have not been with the same employer for more than five years, employers are not required to provide paid sick days in P.E.I. - UnsplashCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — After several days of debate, most of P.E.I.’s elected members voted against a private member’s bill that would have granted 10 days of paid sick leave to workers in P.E.I.by Green MLA Trish Altass. During debate in the legislature, Altass stressed the COVID-19 pandemic had highlighted the need for paid sick days.DR.

Speaking to reporters on Nov. 23, Economic Growth Minister Bloyce Thompson said he voted against the bill because of concerns over the possible economic cost of 10 paid sick days, which his department estimated could be as high as $70 million. “I’ve provided evidence why 10. But if others feel it should be less, put a number forward,” Altass said during debate on Nov. 22.

Thompson’s department told SaltWire a total of 1,987 workers and self-employed individuals accessed paid sick leave coverage under the special leave fund to date in 2022.“Businesses have the choice whether or not to access it. This is businesses being allowed to choose what is best for Islanders’ health, not Islanders themselves,” Altass told the legislature on Nov. 22.
