After P.E.I.'s regulator announced it would be approving a historically high rent increase, many Island tenants are uncertain about their future living arrangements and whether they can afford to stay in the province.

“For me, particularly, it could mean I am out of my apartment,” he said. “Our lease ends in, I think, three months now, which means once the lease is over, who really knows what will happen.”Public protests have formed outside the P.E.I. legislature since the Sept. 21 announcement, including a rally that attracted about 100 people on Oct. 8.

“My future seems precarious at the moment, I have no idea, really,” he said. “I’ve looked around at places and right now, everything is significantly out of my means. I would likely have to find a new place to live, which is scary because I left Halifax due to rents increasing and thinking I would be a little safer here. Now, it does not seem to be the case.”

MacIntyre, who moved from P.E.I. to Ottawa in September, says her move was motivated by her partner being accepted into a master's program in the Canadian capital.“For example, the apartment we have in Ottawa, we’re paying the same for a one-bedroom here that we would pay in Charlottetown,” she said in a phone interview on Sept. 22. “There are so many more educational and work opportunities in Ottawa, and higher wages as well.
