Liberal leader Sharon Cameron plans to run against P.E.I. Green Opposition leader Peter Bevan-Baker in the next provincial election.
Cameron said her decision to run in New Haven-Rocky Point, against Bevan-Baker, was about making a statement. Cameron also said past Liberal premiers, such as Alex Campbell, Catherine Callbeck and Robert Ghiz had a legacy of “having vision” and “building plans and implementing those plans." She did not mention the most recent Liberal premier, Wade MacLauchlan.
The Liberal party suffered a crushing defeat in the 2019 election, reduced from the governing party to third-party status. The governing Progressive Conservatives, meanwhile, have been riding high voter satisfaction levels since the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic according to quarterly polling from Narrative Research.
In a speech before members of the P.E.I. Liberal caucus and a group of supporters, Cameron did not mention Bevan-Baker or the Greens at all. Instead, she focused on health care and inflation-related anxieties in the province.
