LENNOX ISLAND, P.E.I. — Lennox Island First Nation Chief Darlene Bernard hopes a former West Prince airbase could be converted into the largest solar farm in the province.
And it appears there are funding opportunities to get the project off the ground. The federal government’s 2024 budget included a $36-million commitment to support clean energy generation in Indigenous communities. The P.E.I. government, which owns the former airbase, has been slow to come to an agreement to lease the land to Bernard’s community.A proposed solar project, which the Lennox Island First Nation hopes to construct on the site of a former RCAF airbase, is on hold.
Speaking in response to Henderson’s questions, Environment Minister Steven Myers appeared to indicate support for the Lennox Island project. However, it is unclear what duty to consult the province would have a lease of Crown-owned land to the Lennox Island First Nation. SaltWire made multiple requests for an interview with Hudson or other Transportation and Infrastructure staff. These requests were declined.
