But most of the 13.5 million installed are the first-generation SMETS1 meters, which can go “dumb” when a customer switches. It means they stop sending automatic readings, or the in-home display showing energy usage stops working properly. The hitch was reported by 58 per cent of smart meter customers surveyed by consumer watchdog Which?.
