More than 100 individuals have been injured by firecrackers and fireworks with the New Year revelry still four days away. Data from the Department of Health ( DOH ) showed that there are now 101 firecracker-related injuries recorded from December 22 to 27 (6 a.m.) in 62 sentinel hospitals. 'We have recorded 101 injuries nationwide coming from our sentinel hospitals,' said DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo in a televised public briefing.
In the last 24 hours, the DOH noted that 32 additional cases have been reported. Domingo related that regions with the most cases are in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, Ilocos Region, and Central Visayas. The health department noted that eight out of 10 of the injuries were caused by illegal firecrackers, particularly boga, 5-star, and piccolo. 'Even the legal firecracker kwitis made it to the top 4 cause of injuries,' noted Domingo. Most of the injuries, Domingo said, were in the eyes, hands, head, legs, and arms. 'Some five percent of the 101 firecracker injuries needed amputation,' said the health official. More than six out of every 10 cases also involved active users of firecrackers while the rest are passive users. The majority (82) of the victims were aged 19 and below, while 19 were aged 20 and above. The DOH also reported that 92 victims are males while the remaining nine are females
