Planning is underway to replace the Abbot Pass Hut, a mountain refuge that stood for close to a century along the Alberta\u002DB.C. border.

Built in 1922, the Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin National Historic Site, better known as the Abbot Pass Hut, sat high in the Rockies overlooking Lake Louise and Lake O’Hara for nearly 100 years. A rock fall in the autumn of 2016 and erosion caused by climate change threatened the hut’s foundation, forcing its closure and eventual demolition of the structure last spring, shortly before the 100th anniversary of its completion.

“It was really a flagship site in the Rockies,” said Carine Salvy, executive director of the Alpine Club of Canada, the former operator of the site. “It was popular for hikers who wanted to go up there and enjoy the views … and it was also prized by climbers and mountaineers who wanted to scale Mount Lefroy, Mount Victoria.

The hut was designated a national historic site in 1992, but due to safety concerns surrounding the stability of the hut, it was closed to overnight visitors 2018. Despite its multiple attempts to save the structure, Parks Canada ended up dismantling the hut in 2022. “The structure was digitized to ensure the history is maintained and the area is still the site of an incredible story that needs to be told,” said Ron Hallman, Parks Canada CEO, in a joint news release from the three groups last week.Article contentOutside of historical significance, Salvy said there’s a practical need for a new structure as well.

“In terms of safety, that’s not ideal,” she said. “We’re looking forward to operating the new hut once it’s built.”
