Planners warn out of date flood maps and a lack of statewide coordination mean Victoria is not adequately prepared for flooding and new homes are being built on flood plains.

The warning comes as Victorians continue to battle floods across the state, with thunderstorms in the state’s north and thousands of people isolated by rising water. Keddie said some flood mapping was up to 20 years old and planners had to deal with a patchwork of datasets and maps gathered and applied inconsistently by local councils and water authorities which were reluctant to highlight the flood risks of properties.“It would be naive to think that politics is not entwined in some of the issues around how we respond to manage flooding,” she said.
