The NHL team faces a tough task in improving goaltending and roster depth as an ownership change looms in the background.
Accordingly, the incoming bosses will be asking the same question as the fans: Do Dorion and Smith deserve another shot at putting the finishing touches on the rebuild that began during the 2017-18 season?
Much of that increase was based on enthusiasm created by Dorion’s signing and trading spree last summer. However, the Senators were outscored 175-149 in five-on-five play. Whether it comes from inside the organization or through trades and free agency, that depth needs to be bolstered. DeBrincat, previously a two-time 40-goal scorer with the Chicago Blackhawks, fell shy of 30. More was expected after the package that Dorion gave up — first- and second-round draft picks last summer and a third-round choice in 2024 — to secure him. Earlier this week, Dorion said the team would keep DeBrincat by signing him to his $9-million qualifying offer for next season.
Perhaps the biggest question mark for the summer is whom that defence will play in front of next season. The Senators have yet to find the correct answers in goal.
