An earlier statement from the board about the Gloucester High student’s assault listed the reporting tool as one way the board is acting to “build a positive school climate where all students feel safe, valued and know that they belong…”Students are still encouraged to contact teachers, principals or other school staff with any concerns.
“How school staff and/or the OCDSB responds to a concern or incident will depend on the situation,” said the board in a statement. “We appreciate the courage it may have taken to report a concern. School staff are trained in how to use information submitted in a way that respects anonymity and protects others.”Article content“Administrators are trained in how to use the information submitted,”“If they get a name reported as part of a concern, they won’t go right away and confront anyone.
Sharanya Sivasathiyanathan, the co-president of the Rideau Students Union and a Grade 10 student at John McCrae Secondary School, said the tool is a “step in the right direction”.Advertisement 6There are pros and cons to anonymous reporting, she noted. “I have not personally come across bullying, but can imagine that for someone my age to experience that kind of hate or harassment and be expected to reveal their identity on top of sharing what happened to them—that would be especially terrifying. It promotes speaking out against hate not only as a victim, but also as a witness to the circumstance.”
