Former Conservative MP Kenny Chiu presented a private member’s bill before he was defeated in 2021 after being targeted by a disinformation campaign. Conservative senator Leo Housakos tabled a similar bill in the Senate last year, but it has been stalled ever since. Mendicino also insisted on the importance of engaging Chinese Canadians in the process, and was joined by Minister of International Trade Mary Ng and MP Jean Yip to make that point.
