Public servant Erkan Ates has appealed to the federal government to grant his relatives emergency visas to Ottawa.

“When everyone realized the extent of the damage, there is almost like a mass exodus happening,” Ates said. Ates, a public servant, has appealed to the federal government to grant his relatives emergency visas so they can be cared for in Ottawa until they’re able to return to Malatya.Article content He wants the federal government to establish a program for earthquake victims similar to that created for war refugees from Ukraine. The Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel offers Ukrainians extended temporary status in Canada and allows them to work, study and stay in this country until it’s safe to return to Ukraine.Article content
