“I think my mom bought a record of the music, and I used to just dance to it in the living room,” Fournier says. “I had memories of some of the dances and I used to make up what the music suggested. I really loved to escape to that world of music and dance, and I think put me in ballet after that.”Article content
It was Fournier’s turn to hang up her pointe shoes in 2008, at the age of 38. Feeling the need for a break from ballet, she switched gears and went to the University of Toronto to get her BA. She considered law school but decided instead to focus on her young family. They soon moved to Calgary when her husband’s job was transferred. “I never thought I’d join the ballet world again,” she says.
“I started thinking about what’s important, and I realized I really missed being creative,” she said. “An opportunity came up to teach , and I felt completely different about it than I had five years earlier. They offered me a full-time position and I jumped in fully as a teacher, which I’d never really done. I’m so happy.”
