Osamu Suzuki , who transformed small-car specialist Suzuki Motor into a global brand with significant success in India , passed away on Wednesday at the age of 94 after battling cancer. The company announced his death on Friday. Under Suzuki's charismatic leadership spanning four decades until 2021, the firm's sales surged more than tenfold. Born on January 30, 1930, in Gifu, Japan, he married into the founding family and became president in 1978.

Identifying himself as an 'old man at a small business,' he prioritized developing lightweight 'kei' vehicles, many of which gained popularity for their fuel efficiency and maneuverability. He actively pursued international collaborations and overseas opportunities to grow his business. The automaker previously partnered with General Motors and Volkswagen, and in 2019, forged a capital alliance with Toyota. He expanded significantly in India, where the company's subsidiary now holds the top market share. Upon retiring as chairman in 2021, the company's sales reached 3.18 trillion yen ($20 billion). When he took over in 1978, sales stood at 323 billion yen, according to the Nikkei Shimbun business daily
