The development of the battery will ease concerns about the storage capacity of Australia’s National Electricity Market.

Origin Energy will spend $600 million to develop a large-scale battery at the site of the soon-to-close Eraring coal power station, as future owner Brookfield supports acceleration of its transition away from fossil fuels.– Australia’s largest coal power generator that supplies about a quarter of NSW’s energy needs – in 2025. The company said on Thursday it has made a final investment decision to proceed with the 460MW battery.

Stage one involves construction of a 460MW battery storage system with a dispatch duration of two hours, anticipated to come online in the final quarter of the 2025 calendar year. Origin has the option to increase the battery to 700MW and four hours dispatch duration in the future, it said. . Industry executives believe the newly installed NSW government will be required to strike a deal with Brookfield – which is on course to acquire Origin assuming it receives the necessary regulatory approvals – to extend the coal power station’s lifespan.

“Eraring is a strategic site with high-quality connection infrastructure enabling us to deliver energy into major demand centres. Development of the Eraring battery is a key next step as we look to transform the Eraring site for the future, given our intention to exit coal-fired generation by as early as August 2025,” Mr Jarvis said.

Stop just thinking of panda bears and the Great Wall. “Wakey, wakey, this is really a dictatorship … and not just that, it really does want to control people even here or in America.”
