Last week a brightly clad Indigenous dancer stepped and twirled to the rhythm of a drum amidst hundreds of students and faculty gathered in a public atrium at the University of Lethbridge in southern Alberta.

For Widdowson, the injustices of colonialism and residential schools were simply well-intentioned efforts to close the gap. Wokism, she said, has forced many universities to cater to the “Indigenous residential school survivor identity” and punish anyone who doesn’t want to go along. According to Widdowson, universities now act like “totalitarian” regimes bent on stifling all dissent.
