We cannot rely on Germany and international donor banks to solve the complex problem of stem cell donation. We need a Canadian solution to address the urgent demand for stem cells. Opinion by Carolyn Kay

In my case, there was a perfect match with an anonymous donor. Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc also had such a match in 2019, for his diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s. When I found out that my donor was German this struck me as eerily remarkable, since I am a German historian. Then I discovered that LeBlanc also had a German donor. I told my hematologist and he laughed. Well, he said, the odds were good that both of your donors would be German — most of our donors are German males.

DKMS is a leader in calling for donor registration and in maintaining connections until the transplant. In contrast, Canada has a significant donor retention problem, because CBS provides little contact between the time that donors first sign up and the time when they are asked to donate their stem cells. More than half of those registered end up saying no. However, there are glimmers of hope in Canada through volunteer-driven stem cell clubs in universities, started by hematologist Dr.
