But a key difference was left out of Taylor’s account — he failed to mention that Nichols’ assailants were five Black police officers. This first omission was a hint of what was to come: Taylor did not intend to let “truth get in the way of a good story.” He cites the 2023 Los Angeles mass shooting when Huu Can Tran, a 72-year-old Chinese male, shot revellers at two dance studios. Police said they had no motive for the crime though acquaintances mentioned jealousy. Regardless, a Chinese man killing Chinese ballroom dancers is not an example of white supremacy run amok.Next, Taylor cites three murders as evidence of racialized violence in Canada.
To be less charitable, Taylor’s work is purposefully misleading. His claims are unfounded. Is that what taxpayers expect from a public university?And while this case focuses on University of Waterloo, similar occurrences take place regularly at campuses across the country. The reason the public hears so little about it is fear.Article content
