Tucker Carlson says the U.S. should invade Canada. Would we roll out the welcome mat? Perhaps most Americans aren’t too worried about liberating us. But the Fox personality’s blustering talk reminds us of the real danger. Opinion by bruce_arthur

” and his guest mentioned the laughable meme about Justin Trudeau being Fidel Castro’s son. Gosh, humans are the stupidest smartest species.“Why should we stand back and let our biggest trading partner, the country with which we share the longest border … why should we let it become Cuba? Like, why don’t we liberate it? We’re spending all this money to liberate Ukraine from the Russians. Why are we not sending an armed force north to liberate Canada from Trudeau? And I mean it.

The short answer is, no. The longer answer is, you’re adorable, and no. It would probably take Canada 20 years to source as many sniper rifles as you could buy in a Texas roadside dispensary in one afternoon, and another 10 years for the bullets, and we would be serving the American invaders brunch by noon. It’s called the world’s longest undefended border for a reason.

Naturally, Green was deluged with threatening and abusive emails and calls after his motion was spread across Canada’s torqued right-wing outrage mills; Carlson devoted a quick, scornful segment to the motion Wednesday night, saying, essentially, can’t you take a joke?“If you were to do a quick Google search and look at all the extremist, white supremacist, white nationalist violence, and then do a search on how many times Tucker Carlson was referenced as an influence … you know, Alex Jones...

Green mentions Brazil’s post-election spasm, and Jan. 6 in the U.S., and our minor-league version, the convoy, and the spectre of political violence here. It’s not an unfair point, actually: there is a transnational fever out there, and it can go to crazy places.
