The Maple Leafs have to know every game could be their last together. The stars say they’re blocking out the noise before Game 4, but it’s waiting to suffocate them. Opinion by bruce_arthur
can win a game. There shouldn’t be a question, even down 3-0, even if they’re baked and bleary-eyed from the Florida sun, even with the immediate future of the franchise as constructed an open question, now. Of course the Leafs can win a game.
Ideally the team’s biggest stars would have played their best in Game 3, when the Leafs had a chance to clamber back in the series, and instead, considering the situation and the stakes. Every hockey performance has a context, sure. Teammates matter. But the bottom line is their performance surprised even some in the organization.
“I think I heard Auston say it, and you know, I think we've been saying it this whole time,” Marner said. “I mean, we don't care what you guys say. We don't listen to you guys outside of the locker room. We're just focused on ourselves and this group in here.” “Let's not get distracted from the things that really matter,” Keefe said. “Those guys carried us offensively through the Tampa series and came through at clutch times, scored us big goals in big moments. We're here playing largely on the backs of how they came through for us in those moments. They'll come through for us again.
