Opinion Althia Raj: The longer Justin Trudeau stalls, the more he looks like he has something to hide
Justin Trudeau looked smug, arrogant and embattled on Friday, when his frustration from the past week bubbled up and landed on Brittany Hobson, the sixth reporter in line at his Winnipeg news conference.
They were good questions. But instead of answering them, Trudeau ran through his talking points, outlining steps his government took to protect the integrity of the 2019 and 2021 elections. In 2018, the government established the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security to monitor threats and protect critical infrastructure against cyber incidents.
The bureaucrats did not find cause in 2021 and 2019 to warn the public of foreign interference. As the prime minister stated, and even Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has noted, the outcomes of the contests are not in dispute. The Liberals won. In committee, Poilievre’s MPs showed singular focus on suggesting that the prime minister had failed to act on information he held . Conservatives want to call Trudeau’s chief of staff, Katie Telford, to testify. But because officials cannot reveal classified information without breaking the law, you can expect Liberals — guilty or not — to appear cagey. And that’s precisely the look the opposition is waiting for, to clip and promote on social media.
