Gregor Chisholm: The Blue Jays’ rotation could turn, one way or another, on the performance of José Berríos
believe they have one of the best starting rotations in the major leagues. Whether they are proven right or not likely depends on the arm of José Berríos.
Berríos’s performance was a disaster from start to finish, and it came after he signed a seven-year contract worth $131 million last off-season. He was acquired to be the solution to the Jays’ previous pitching woes but became part of the problem. Some of that work has centred around tweaking his delivery to get a longer extension toward the plate. Berríos also said he was trying to keep his mechanics more in line to avoid falling off to the left. After experimenting with both sides of the rubber last year, he now sets up from the middle.
“The strikeouts were still there, the home runs were a little bit higher last year. But I’m as confident in him, and I know John Schneider and Pete Walker are as well, as from the day we acquired him.” A return to form by Berríos would lengthen out the quality innings from the rotation. That would make things easier on the bullpen and put the club in a better position to handle whatever problems come. That becomes a much bigger challenge if there’s another starter who is also a liability.
