Dave Feschuk: Sabres defencemen are good enough to rekindle the QEW rivalry
It hasn’t helped, of course, that the teams have been on disparate trajectories: The Leafs have made the playoffs every year since 2017; the Sabres haven’t made a post-season appearance since 2011. And it hasn’t helped that the schedule has kept them apart. The Battle of the QEW played out six times a season as recently as 2010-11, and eight times a year for a few seasons until 2008-09.
If the Leafs and Sabres ever do get their tête-à-tête properly rekindled, the teams are a fascinating study in contrasts. While the Leafs are unapologetically built from front to back — with the franchise re-emphasizing its commitment to a strong forward group with last week’s acquisition of centremen Ryan O’Reilly and Noel Acciari — the Sabres are built from back to front.
“It’s hard to mention one of them without the other,” Granato said of Dahlin and Power. “Because they are both amazing players.” None of that will matter come mid-April, when the Leafs put their forward-centric architecture to the playoff test in what figures to be its last chance at redemption. Buffalo can make the case it already has two better defenceman than Toronto, sure, but Toronto, with its commitment to five-man, 200-foot detail, is still the better defensive team this season.
