Opinion: Random attacks on transit. A city in profound decline. Is a safe subway really a fantasy too far?

Sexual assaults in station washrooms. One woman smashing another woman in the head with a whiskey bottle. And just the other day, I watched as a dishevelled male snatched the headphones from a young girl’s ears, ducking through the doors sliding closed at Sherbourne Station — among the countless “small” crimes committed on public transit that go unreported.

If Toronto is not actually going to hell, it certainly feels like a city in profound decline, with the TTC system frequently the stage for dystopic savagery. I don’t know anymore. As the TTC has become a substitute for an increasingly overwhelmed shelter system, we see more and more of the endlessly-wandering, drug addicts, people in mental distress pushing their carted belongings onto the subway and falling asleep, because TTC operators are warned against disturbing them.
