Jason Logan: Nick Taylor enters the Canadian sports ‘where were you when’ pantheon
Maybe this victory ranks behind Weir at Augusta National and maybe not. You decide. But this is not the time to compare, anyway. It is time for Canada to celebrate.
For Taylor’s caddy David Markle, a former touring pro, he was there helping his man, of course, and later standing with the final hole’s pin flag in hand, soaking it all in, tears in his eyes. Taylor’s advantage disappeared altogether when he made a bogey on 16, but back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 put him in front again. From there it was a waiting game, with Fleetwood still on the course. And wouldn’t you know it, the Englishman made two birdies coming home as well to force a playoff.
So they went to the fourth playoff hole and Taylor reached the green in two and had 72 feet for eagle with Fleetwood in good position for birdie. Taylor was simply trying to lag that putt close, he said later, and then fate or the golfing gods intervened and helped the ball fall in the hole and pandemonium ensured.
