What about mayor-elect Chow’s vote share? She won with support from 37.2 per cent of those who did vote, compared with 32.5 per cent for runner-up Ana Bailão and 8.6 per cent for also-ran Mark Saunders. On one hand, it’s the lowest vote share for a mayor in megacity history. But on the other hand, it’s not remarkably lower thanin which he got 40 per cent of the vote to Doug Ford’s 34 per cent and Olivia Chow’s 23 per cent.

I mention those statistical ties because they add a more nuanced depiction of the political landscape. If you consider the wards where less than two per cent of the vote separated Chow and Bailão to be ties, then Chow either won or tied in 18 out of 25 city wards. I don’t think that system is all that complicated — the parties in Canada mostly use ranked ballots to elect their leaders without controversy.
