Edward Keenan: Mike Layton has a good chance at replacing John Tory. But does his family want him to?
The question for him is if he wants to win. By most accounts I’ve heard, he doesn’t have any abiding ambition for the job. But he does love the city and feel an obligation to serve it. The biggest complicating factor is his family. He wants to be a present father actively involved in his two kids’ lives. That’s why he left city council. It’s not clear that anyone can play a role like that while doing a good job as mayor of Toronto.
Maybe a potential mayor could insist from the beginning on some balance — time away to walk kids to school, help them with homework, tuck them in at night, attend the school plays and show up for the minor hockey games. Maybe voters would understand that — or maybe the modified schedule would become a stick to beat them with whenever they missed a cultural event or had a slow response to a crisis call because they were engaged in family matters.
And who can blame them for wondering if it’s worth it? As it’s recently been performed, the job of mayor of Toronto has excruciatingly long hours, and you are on call 365 days a year. For that, you often don’t have the authority to do the things you’d like to do, you have little privacy, you are constantly subject to attack from all sides for what you haven’t done, and you have to deal constantly with Doug Ford.
