Now for Ukrainians, food is the only pleasure. We don't have any entertainment, we don't go to parties, we don't travel All we have left is to please our family with a delicious meal. Opinion by Julia Marich

The first immigrant from Ukraine to Canada was an ear of wheat. It was brought by Canadian farmer David Fife in 1842. This Ukrainian variety of wheat gave a much higher yield and was named Red Fife.

Ukrainians are very hospitable. If you visit us, a rich and varied table with many dishes awaits you. Very often foreign tourists made fun of it. They were surprised: Ukraine is not so rich, and people spend so much money on festive dishes. I was sometimes ashamed of this national tradition. Ukraine experienced a terrible tragedy – the Holodomor of 1932-33. During which 4 million Ukrainians died of hunger. The Soviet authorities forcibility took the harvest and all the food products from the people. I am convinced that it will be difficult for our nation to forget this tragedy. The fear of hunger was passed down to us genetically.

Logistics was completely disrupted. It was difficult to buy the most necessary things. When Russia started burning Ukrainian fields, stealing our grain and vegetable crops, everyone was gripped by the fear of famine. Each family tried to have a stock of long-lasting products. It was actually very scary. In the spring of 2022, Ukrainians, in fear, began to plant a lot of potatoes, carrots, and cabbage. Everyone ran to cultivate the most abandoned scraps of land.
