Leafs mailbag: The players aren’t tipping the cap, and Patrick Kane probably won’t join the Leafs
Few fans like the NHL’s salary cap. There are those out there who believe the NHL would be better off without it, and I’m inclined to agree.
But the cap helps the small markets and pretty much ensures all 32 teams turn a profit. From a business perspective, it helps the bottom line even if it is conservative in nature, impedes growth and forces teams to part with popular players that they have drafted, developed and would like to keep. Walsh’s biggest strength appears to be his ability to communicate. He’ll need it to converse with the 800 or so members of the association and explain to them another eye-roller, escrow. That’s the part they can’t get their head around, a deal they made to reach into their own pockets to make sure owners make money.
When Matt Knies didn’t sign last year and help in the playoffs, it made me a bit nervous that he may hold out this year for money or hold out to become a free agent. What are the rules in regard to a drafted college player not signing and becoming a free agent? Also, is there a max salary a college drafted player can sign on an entry level contract? The only way Knies can become an unrestricted free agent is to play four full years in college, meaning two more after this one.
I get that it is nice to feel wanted — so if a team traded for you, that means something — but I also don’t understand why a player would rush into a new deal before at least seeing how they like the new team and living in a new city. Seems odd. And I doubt that the Isles were in his top five before the trade happened. What do you think the psychology is behind re-upping so quickly with the new team? Many hockey players are conservative by nature.
I am really tired of all the Ovechkin love, including the all-star coverage. Wayne Gretzky’s endless, unwelcome commentary during the Leafs-Capitals game was particularly gag-inducing. As said, he has overtly supported the murderous dictator and war criminal for many years and did propaganda for Putin during the last invasion of Ukraine.
