Hazel inspired thousands of women while endearing herself to the men in their lives. She showed up for them all. She cheered them on. She encouraged them and supported them. Opinion by Kathleen_Wynne

We actually thought she would never leave us. With her salty laugh and her no-nonsense advice, Hazel McCallion charmed us, chastised us and loved us.

But neither of us believed that a single disagreement defined a relationship. We shared an understanding that getting stuff done wasn’t easy and that we needed to keep pushing. Hazel and I never argued about the label “feminist.” She didn’t like it because she believed that merit should always be the measure of a person’s work and that tokenism is dangerous. She believed that if you do your homework you’ll get ahead.

As Hazel grew older, she stayed young by staying involved. She was always available to help out, chairing the gathering of GTA Mayors that I convened throughout my term as premier, working to co-ordinate regional solutions. I never once heard her complain of an ache or a pain. She would show up in her colourful suit jacket and blouse with a flowery broach at her neck, dressed like a woman of the past so clearly ready to take on the future.
