Opinion: Housing is an area where city hall can and must do better. But where are the fully formed policy proposals to end homelessness or reform planning from the mayoral candidates?
is the one candidate with a platform here. But she is rarely included in coverage. Her platform is clearly the most comprehensive and diverse set of ideas on the issue. Sadly, this election doesn’t seem to be about welcoming new voices let alone new ideas.
One place there is debate is on Twitter. But if we are going to solve the housing crisis, we have to get past overly simplistic intergenerational social media squabbles that reduce the problem to NIMBY vs YIMBY. Supply is needed but supply alone won’t solve the problem. Of course the planning process needs to be reset top to bottom and council must focus on building bigger stronger neighbourhoods and doing it faster. However no mayoralty candidate has said a word about how they would fix the planning problems in this city. Not one.
There is also a lot more to the problem than just fixing zoning. The homeless need supportive housing. Skilled workers and first-time buyers need a housing market where they can live close to work and start families as badly as residents of Toronto Community Housing Corporation have a right to safe and secure units.Homelessness. No municipality in Canada uses shelters as much as Toronto. This city’s shelters are expensive and inhumane.
