However, we are not merely economic partners but like-minded nations that respect the rule of law, human rights and democracy. To protect these values, we hold such security exercises as the annual KAEDEX, strengthening co-ordination between the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Royal Canadian Navy in the increasingly vital Indo-Pacific region.

Much is possible through community and infrastructure planning. For example, urban development in Japan is typically carried out along railway lines, meaning residential housing, including retirement homes, are within walking distance from train stations and their surrounding shopping malls, nurseries and daycares. Ontario Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma visited Japan earlier this year to tour such railway infrastructure and urban development projects.

Japan also possesses recycling technology that can be used to protect the Canadian environment. Japanese manufacturers believe, for example, that electric vehicle batteries can be produced using rare metals, both newly mined and recovered from various recycled materials.
