Opinion Martin Regg Cohn: Here’s why Doug Ford has no love for Pierre Poilievre
Doug Ford and Pierre Poilievre: So similar in party branding and yet so disconnected in political marketing.
It’s not merely about Ford triangulating with Trudeau. It’s about the premier annihilating any trace of a relationship with Poilievre’s Tories ― treating him as a political non-entity in Canada’s biggest electoral battleground. Ford not only talks regularly with Trudeau but with his deputy PM, Chrystia Freeland. Vic Fedeli, Ontario’s minister of economic development, incessantly texts his federal counterpart François-Philippe Champagne and appears alongside him to cut ribbons and cut the cake at factory openings.
They also share a talent pool, with longtime Tories hopscotching between Queen’s Park and Parliament Hill: Ford’s cabinet includes former Harperites such as Paul Calandra, Greg Rickford and Stephen Lecce, who worked alongside Poilievre in Ottawa; MP Melissa Lantsman worked for Ford on his first election campaign before she ran federally, rising to become Poilievre’s deputy leader.
