Rumours fester when there’s no trust. Since 2020, Toronto has been developing a Toronto Island Park Master Plan, but recently widespread concern blew up over what is, and isn’t, being proposed for Hanlan’s Point. Opinion by shawnmicallef
has been at the centre of this, not just with encampments, but simple things like not being honest about public washrooms being open or closed.
It was a real human talking. It was honest, even vulnerable, and there was no spin or the usual corporate communications nothing-speak we’re often fed. This honestly helped calm the fears of many people around Hanlan’s, a place at the intersection of a few communities who hold it dear. It’s been a delicate balance, though, and for years beachgoers have worried about its future for a few reasons. There was the existential threat of erosion that ate away at a considerable part of the beach over the last decades — all the way to the treeline in places — but heroic work by thehas restored a large part of the beach. With the new master plan, there’s a chance to officially expand the clothing-optional area as the original 1999 area was severely eroded.
