Farewell John Tory: You’ve been a good mayor. While rarely inspirational and too often overly cautious, Tory has led the city through two of its most difficult times in history. Opinion by BobHepburn
I first met John Tory in 2003 when he ran for the first time to be mayor of Toronto, a race he lost to David Miller.
He’s also been a good mayor, arguably the best since the city was amalgamated in 1998 with surrounding municipalities of East York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough and York. First, he restored a sense of sanity and decorum to city hall after the crazy years of the late Rob Ford. Under Tory, the mayor’s office was no longer treated as an international embarrassment.
True, Tory had his critics who consider his tenure as mayor a huge disappointment marked by years of wasted opportunities. The list of those with complaints is long: taxpayers, cyclists, motorists, homeless advocates, TTC riders and others. Under his watch, gun violence has seemingly increased, city parks are dirtier, violence on subways and buses is scaring away commuters.
