The climate crisis is an issue that impacts all communities. No matter who you are, the adverse effects of global climate change will affect your life in some form. While its impacts are felt globally, those who are already marginalized — often due to income, race, immigration status or existing health problems — are experiencing the most severe consequences.

For example, in a climate-related disaster, low-income communities are more likely to experience economic hardship due to job loss, property damage or displacement. These disasters can further exacerbate existing economic difficulties.

First, we can begin by supporting community-led initiatives focused on addressing environmental injustices in our community. These groups often have the knowledge and language to help us better understand marginalized communities’ challenges and can best inform us on how to implement solutions. Many often host volunteer events or educational sessions to help us stay informed.

Lastly, we must center the voices of those from marginalized communities in discussions on climate change. Community organizers are often the trailblazers in conversations on justice, so let’s look to them for solutions centered on climate equity. By focusing on intersectional approaches to climate change, we can better support those most impacted by environmental injustice and fight the climate crisis together.
