Doug Ford’s vision for Ontario Place puts people last. Moving the Ontario Science Centre from Don Mills to the waterfront would marry a great concept with an underused location. Opinion by reggcohn

You see what you want to see. When I look at the rivals vying to be Toronto’s new mayor, I see a lot of old thinking. When I read the commentary about how to bring it back to life, I hear a lot of sentimentality.

My point is that the prerequisite to rethinking this precious piece of real estate is to stop pining for the past. At the same time, we should resist the temptation of untried or unproven concepts that lead to a future of failure. Understandably, urban planners are scratching their heads over this one. Why erect a clubby enclave in the heart of a public space soon to be well served by a public subway ?Spa people won’t take the sweaty subway to luxuriate in facials and massages. They want to glide to their aromatherapy appointment in leather-appointed Land Rovers or gull-winged Teslas.

This is surely a failure of imagination. Parkland is precious, to be sure, but more of the same in a city of ravines and beach boardwalks won’t attract Torontonians and tourists alike to an enduring destination experience. The appeal of this pitch is that nothing succeeds like success. Bailão isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, just repurpose the Science Centre by giving it more runway by the waterfront.
