Opinion: Premier Doug Ford is facing a reckoning for his reckless rhetoric. And we are all paying a price, yet again, for cheap talk by a politician with short planning horizons. Suddenly, we are short of power.

Doug Ford first won political power by generating more heat than light.Belatedly, Ford’s Tories are sounding the alarm: Behold their red alert over looming brownouts.the sprawling nuclear power station in the eastern GTA — by one year and possibly a decade — is cutting it awfully close. Too close for comfort.

It’s not the new nuclear plan that’s unnerving, but the lack of planning, which has left us in the lurch. How did we get to this point? But what if, perchance, Pickering doesn’t pass the test? There will be plenty of red faces over brownouts, starting with the premier and the previous energy minister, Greg Rickford, who dropped the ball during the previous four years of Progressive Conservative government.

Torontonians benefit from among the lowest electricity rates in North America — paying less than Calgarians , and far less than residents of most American cities, according to Hydro-Québec’s annual report. But those low prices come at a high cost to the treasury, thanks to annual subsidies approaching $7 billion a year — which amounts to all taxpayers subsidizing ratepayers to consume power as they please.
