Marit Stiles broke through the eerily enduring silence that is Ontario’s NDP leadership race this week, declaring her candidacy before anyone else could get their act together.Long past time the NDP — Ontario’s one and only official opposition party — re-energized itself after 13 long years under the previous management. It’s not Andrea Horwath’s party anymore., an omission and an admission at one and the same time. The previous leader’s legacy does not live on, it moves on.
For none other seems ready or resolved to declare at this late stage of the game. Bear in mind that the longer they wait, the less time left to raise money. Like any politician of every partisan stripe, Stiles stressed the touchstone of “affordability” — lamenting the rising cost of food and shelter amid declining purchasing power. On cue, the crowd chorused “Shame!” as New Democrats are wont to chant.
Where once Barack Obama campaigned on the “audacity of hope,” she proffers more anodyne hype: Stiles vows she will overcome the “hopelessness” that kept so many voters at home — and kept Doug Ford in office. The first question from reporters seemed the most predictable: How does she differ from her predecessor?
