Opinion: In choosing not to invest in international development, it undermines Canada’s ability to help the most vulnerable — at a time when they most need it.
In February, Journalists for Human Rights , the organization I lead, sent former CTV National News anchor Lisa LaFlamme to Kenya and Tunisia. We asked her to track case studies we’d recorded and report back on their real-world impact in the most transparent way possible — through strong journalism.
And LaFlamme spoke with a young Kenyan girl named Serafina, a teen mother who was able to resume her education by applying to a school that provided particular supports for teen mothers. Serafina told Lisa she learned about the school through the media — through coverage JHR helped start. This week’s federal budget threatens all this progress. It represents a missed opportunity that will significantly hamper Canadian NGOs’ efforts toward achieving the sustainable development goals.
These cuts to international assistance tell the global majority that Canada is not serious about walking its talk in a sustained way on human rights, democracy, media freedoms, nor support for women and girls. In choosing not to invest in Canadian international development, we undermine Canada’s ability to help the most vulnerable — at a time when they most need it.
