Opinion: Canada must strengthen its woefully weak whistleblower legislation. It seems neither the party in power, nor the party that may win power, want to protect truth-tellers. Instead, Canadians may get more theatre.
The juxtaposition of two current events exposes a telling contradiction about the two main political parties in Canada: what they say versus what they do.
A recent international study of whistleblower legislation in about 50 countries ranked Canada’s PSDPA legislation last, tied for bottom ranking with Lebanon. You’d think by now they’d want to ensure that the next time there’s a serious “mishap” in governance, there’d be a safety valve, a safe way for an ethical public servant to come forward with that hidden information, vital to the public interest, without suffering retaliation.
But political self-interest appears to be at play. It seems neither the party in power, nor the party that may win power next time, want such measures. So now, instead of better legislation via OGGO, Canadians may get more theatre.
