Mike Wilner: Canada calls up old friends to stock World Baseball Classic bullpen
You can be forgiven if, upon looking at the roster unveiled by Team Canada for next month’s WorldPitchers John Axford, Andrew Albers, Phillippe Aumont, Adam Loewen and Scott Mathieson — mainstays for Canada, with a combined age of 186 when the first pitch flies on March 12 — are back for one more kick at the can because when the Maple Leaf calls, they’re happy to answer.
Albers last pitched professionally in 2021, mostly for the Twins’ Triple-A team in St. Paul, Minn. Aumont was last on a mound for Ottawa of the Can-Am League in 2019, Mathieson in Japan the same year and Loewen in Triple-A with Texas in 2018. Freddie Freeman is the headliner. The 2020 National League MVP, who will suit up for Canada for a second time, led the majors with 47 doubles and a .407 on-base percentage this past season. The Dodgers first baseman was born in California to Canadian parents who met in Windsor, Ont., and plays for Canada as a tribute to his late mother.
Along with O’Neill, the outfield could also include Toronto’s Denzel Clarke — the first pro baseball player ever to hit an inside-the-park home run in consecutive games, with Oakland’s Lansing affiliate last season — and 20-year-old Owen Caissie of Burlington, a second-round pick in 2020.
