Gregor Chisholm: Brandon Belt says he’s healthy, ready for new start in Toronto
Brandon BeltA right knee injury that hobbled him for each of the last two years was proving to be too much. Belt was used to the discomfort and played through it plenty of times across a 12-year stint with the San Francisco Giants, which included a couple World Series titles.
When Belt returned about a month later, the numbers were even worse. He hit .210 with a .636 OPS before his season officially came to an end on Aug. 20. This time he was headed for a surgical room, and at age 34, Belt wasn’t entirely convinced that he would make it back on the field. It apparently didn’t take Belt long to make his decision. After the cartilage was removed in September, he felt the benefits almost immediately. When his off-season training program began, the run of good health continued. Belt said on Monday that he hasn’t experienced swelling after any of his workouts and that he’s finally back to playing with his kids in the yard.
“After the surgery, it was pretty obvious right away that I was going to feel better,” said Belt. “The optimism and the boost I got from feeling that really got me excited about playing this year because I feel like I have so much left to offer. There will be times when Belt takes over for Guerrero at first, but he was signed to become the primary DH. The lack of everyday defensive duties should limit some of the wear and tear on his knee and help keep the rest of his cartilage intact. It might be the thing he needs to extend his career.
