Mike Wilner: Blue Jays avoid an awkward situation with ‘MVP-calibre’ Bo Bichette and keep door open for longer deal

Bichette was the only arbitration-eligible Blue Jay who did not agree to a contract by last month’s deadline, and the sides were scheduled for a Thursday hearing with the club offering $7.5 million and Bichette seeking $5 million. It was the largest gap — tied with Houston all-star outfielder Kyle Tucker, who had a hearing and lost — out of 33 cases.
“We’re always open to that,” Atkins said about the chances of an even longer deal that buys out some of Bichette’s free-agent seasons. “That dialogue is ongoing, as it is with many players, and this is a good step in that process.”
