The main driver behind these deaths in Alberta is a poisoned drug supply that is inconsistent and unknown.
found that the majority of Albertans supported a safer supply that replaces illegal street drugs with pharmaceutical alternatives for those who are unable to stop using.
In October, however, the Alberta government announced that only a small number of Albertans would be able to access such safer supply prescribing. Rather than continuing to be cared for by their trusted nurse or doctor, many patients will have to be transferred to a limited number of AHS clinics. Thiswhich comes into effect on March 5, 2023, will restrict prescribers and their patients from the right to choose the most appropriate treatment option and appropriate location.
being forced off medication and pulled away from existing prescriber relationships will no doubt cause harm by forcing people to turn back to a toxic drug supply, ultimately leading to more deaths. The Alberta Nurses Coalition for Harm Reduction represents nurses who work on the frontlines with people directly impacted by the toxic drug supply and these prescribing changes. Our members report that therapeutic nurse-client relationships are being undermined and fractured as people lose precious trust they have built, sometimes over years, with their health-care provider.
The Alberta government is prioritizing ideology over health and human rights with these legislative changes. People who use drugs deserve health care without discrimination and limiting access to a regulated supply of prescribed medications during the current toxic drug crisis is risking patients’ lives.
