President and CEO of Alberta Health Services responds to story and criticism of AHS decision to drop masking

Mauro Chies, AHS interim president and CEO, explains why it has decided to rescind continuous masking in health-care facilities.

AHS implemented its continuous masking policy in Spring 2020 to protect patients, visitors and staff from contracting COVID-19 while at one of our facilities. Masking was an effective tool when case numbers were high, when immunity was low to non-existent, and when health-care facilities were being significantly impacted by outbreaks.

We are in a different place today. The virus that causes COVID-19 is still circulating, but case numbers are down significantly. The number of people with COVID-19 currently in hospital is down 76 per cent from February 2022. Currently, just one acute care unit in the province is experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak, down from double digits during much of the pandemic.

British Columbia and Saskatchewan rescinded their masking policies in early April, and New Brunswick and Manitoba followed suit in May. Ontario and Quebec allow hospitals to decide on a site-by-site basis.
