'Chain of thought' techniques mean latest LLM is better at stepping through complex challenges
OpenAI on Thursday introduced o1, its latest large language model family, which it claims is capable of emulating complex reasoning.OpenAI has explained the technique as meaning o1"learns to break down tricky steps into simpler ones. It learns to try a different approach when the current one isn't working. This process dramatically improves the model's ability to reason."The cafeteria had 23 apples.
What's new for OpenAI here is that adding computational resources to the inference phase – referred to as"test-time compute" – improves results. That's good news for Nvidia and cloud AI providers who want to sell resources. It’s unclear what it will cost to use the model. OpenAI does not disclose how much test-time compute was required to approach the 80 percent accuracy figure cited in its"o1 AIME accuracy at test time" graph. It could be a significant amount.
